Progreso, without the guesswork.

Progreso is Yucatán’s easiest coastal escape: close enough to Mérida for a day trip, but relaxed enough to make a vacation base of its own. The center revolves around the beach and Malecón, with shallow Gulf water, seafood restaurants, local vendors and the enormous port pier stretching into the horizon.

The best way to enjoy it is not to expect Cancún. Progreso is more casual and local: Gulf-green water instead of Caribbean turquoise, busy family weekends, cruise-day energy and quieter pockets once you move away from the center. Add El Corchito, nearby wetlands or a coastal road trip and there is much more here than a simple beach afternoon.

Where to spend the day

For convenience, start with the central beach along the Malecón: you are close to food, shade, restrooms and the rest of town. The Gulf is typically shallow and gentler than Mexico’s Pacific beaches, which is one reason Progreso is popular with families. For a quieter coastal feel, explore west toward Chelem and Chuburná or east toward Chicxulub and the smaller towns along the coast.
